Paper Color Measurement
In the paper industry, color is a facet of quality and acceptability for consumers. To get the most accurate and consistent color measurements and maximize the quality and efficiency of your manufacturing process, you need the right instrumentation. HunterLab offers advanced tools for paper color measurement that provide the reliable information your company needs for production and quality control.
Types of Paper Color Measurement Instruments
We have several high-quality paper color measurement instruments available, including the MiniScan EZ 4500, UltraScan VIS, SpectraTrend HT and Agera. They can be used to measure different paper types, such as:
- Paperboard
- Cardboard
- Packing paper
- Kraft paper
- House wrap paper
MiniScan EZ 4500
The 45°/0° circumferential geometry of the MiniScan EZ 4500 provides highly accurate measurements for a range of paper finishes, from matte to glossy. And with the lightweight construction of the device, you can easily take it with you for on-the-go paper color measurements.
MiniScan EZ 4500 also comes with embedded software that contains the color scales and indices you need, such as CIE L*a*b*, CIE LCh and Hunter L,a,b. It can also store up to 800 sample measurements with pass/fail tolerances and standard values as well as 100 product setups.
UltraScan VIS
The UltraScan VIS is ideal for paperboard and packing paper. With diffuse d/8° geometry and the ability to measure a spectral range of 360 to 780 nm, it provides precise color measurements in less than two seconds. These fast, accurate results will significantly enhance your color production and quality control processes.
Other features of UltraScan VIS include automated UV calibration and control, large transmission compartment and our EasyMatch QC software. The device provides standard conformance for reflectance and transmittance as well as haze conformance in accordance with ASTM D1003 Procedure B.
SpectraTrend HT
Another good option for packing paper color measurement is the SpectraTrend HT device. Because it's an in-process device with continuous measurement capabilities, it's an excellent choice to put to use during production runs so that you can catch and fix color variation problems faster and with enhanced precision.
With 0°/30° geometry, the SpectraTrend HT provides versatile and precise measurements. The onboard software includes common scales and indices such as Hunter L,a,b, CIE L*a*b*, CIE LCh, E313 Whiteness Index, Tint, E313 Yellowness Index and D1925 Yellowness Index.
Agera
With its 0°/45° circumferential geometry and built-in 60° gloss meter, which is compliant with ASTM D523 and ISO 2813, our Agera instrument has a superior ability to replicate the human visual response to color and light. Agera also illuminates from 360 to 700 nm and will allow you to measure fluorescent and optically brightened paper with simultaneous UV included and UV excluded measurements.
You can view live on-screen images via Agera's built-in five-megapixel camera to help with precise sample placement and capture and store the images as part of the data. Color scales and indices embedded in the software include E313 Whiteness Index, Tint, E313 Yellowness Index, D1925 Yellowness Index, Hunter L,a,b, CIE L*a*b* and CIE LCh.
